Led by the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT), the 1804 Test Strip is a 31-mile section of roadway treated with nine different pavement preservation techniques. This innovative $5.8 million project provides a platform for NDDOT to experiment with various pavement preservation methods outside of the laboratory. North Dakota’s harsh weather conditions contribute to pavement deterioration, requiring frequent preservation or reconstruction efforts. By testing diverse preservation approaches, NDDOT aims to save on material costs and reduce the time workers spend on maintenance and repairs, addressing limited reconstruction and rehabilitation funds amid rising inflation costs. Research indicates that such preservation efforts are vital for prolonging pavement lifespan and improving its condition. The project’s objective is to identify the most cost-effective preservation techniques for achieving high-quality pavement surfaces. Insights gained from the 1804 Test Strip project will benefit roadways statewide well into the future.
