State Street – a crucial north/south corridor in Bismarck – faces escalating traffic volumes due to the city’s ongoing growth. Intersections within the corridor are consistently at the top of the annual high crash analysis. And, similar to many transportation systems nationwide, the corridor’s infrastructure is aging. Spearheaded by North Dakota Department of Transportation, a $21.4 million project replaced and modernized State Street’s traffic signal systems, modified and added turn lanes, revised and improved access points, and made Americans with Disabilities Act curb ramp improvements, while completing concrete pavement and structure repairs. The improvements to the State Street corridor exemplify the efficient use of funds to enhance existing infrastructure while minimizing disruptions to the public and adjacent property owners. The project’s incorporation of turn lanes, access revisions, and modernized traffic signal systems seeks to yield lasting positive impacts in terms of safety benefits and operational enhancements.
