Spearheaded by the North Dakota Department of Transportation, the Wrong-Way Detection Project uses advanced technology to alert drivers, oncoming traffic, and law enforcement in real time – helping prevent serious crashes and save lives. Funded by federal safety formula funds under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the $1.5 million project targeted three high-risk ramp locations on the state highway system, including one site with two previous fatal wrong-way crashes. The system uses camera-based technology to detect wrong-way drivers instantly. When a wrong-way vehicle is identified, alerts are sent to the Public Safety Answering Point and the North Dakota DOT Traffic Management Center. Flashing lights activate to prompt the driver to stop or turn around, while Dynamic Message Signs warn oncoming traffic of the danger ahead. This layered approach has already detected multiple wrong-way drivers since installation, proving effective in preventing potential tragedies and significantly improving roadway safety in these communities.
