Ohio Department of Transportation’s Interstate 90 Variable Speed Limit

The section of I-90 in Lake County is often affected by harsh winter driving conditions, leading to a high number of crashes and multi-car pile-ups. This $1.4 million project installed a new variable speed limit segment of I-90 between two state roads in an effort to significantly reduce crashes. Since its completion, crashes in this stretch of I-90 have dropped by over 35 percent. According to 2023 statistics, winter crashes have decreased by over 43 percent, dropping from 37 to 21 per year. Both commercial freight operators and local residents can now travel more safely in this corridor, resulting in less time lost for the regional commercial economy and a more reliable traveling experience for the local community – even during adverse conditions.
