Oklahoma Department of Transportation’s Historic William H. Murray “Pony” Bridge/ Bridgeport Bridge

The Historic William H. Murray “Pony” Bridge – also known as the Bridgeport Bridge – was preserved and modernized through the Oklahoma Department of Transportation’s strong partnerships, advanced planning, and innovative solutions. Originally opened in 1934, the 40-span pony truss bridge spans the South Canadian River along the longest contiguous stretch of Oklahoma’s Historic Route 66 (US-281). As one of the few non-interstate river crossings within a 50-mile radius, the bridge served critical agricultural traffic but suffered repeated damage due to its narrow width. Declared structurally deficient in 2018, the fracture-critical bridge required extensive rehabilitation to ensure safety while honoring its historical significance.

Due to meticulous planning and cost-effective design, the $35 million project successfully revitalized this iconic structure. Funding included a 2020 Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development or BUILD grant and National Highway Performance Program funds provided through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act; ensuring the bridge remains a functional and cultural landmark for generations to come.
