The US Highway 101 Widening Project in Seaside transformed a once-congested corridor into a safer, more accessible gateway, featuring modern bike lanes, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalks, and enhanced pedestrian crossings. Led by the Oregon Department of Transportation, this $10 million project revitalized local businesses and set a new standard for multimodal transportation in the region. Previously, left-turning vehicles frequently stalled traffic, while pedestrians – especially during the busy summer season – lacked safe crossing points, often risking dangerous crossings. The project addressed these longstanding issues by adding defined access points, curb and gutter systems for improved stormwater drainage, and designated crosswalks, making the corridor safer for all users. Due to $7 million in funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act or IIJA, Oregon DOT was able to prioritize safety, accessibility, and economic vitality. Now, families can safely reach community spaces, and tourists can access hotels without navigating traffic hazards. The investment not only improved connectivity and safety but also boosted Seaside’s economy through sustainable infrastructure improvements; an achievement made possible by the IIJA.
