On June 11, 2023, a fuel tanker carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline crashed on the northbound Cottman Avenue off-ramp from I-95 in Philadelphia. Since this highway carries 160,000 vehicles daily, PennDOT had to act swiftly. To expedite repairs, the project installed a temporary mechanically stabilized wall system that incorporated recycled foamed glass aggregate. This $4.5 million project was a first for PennDOT in an emergency. Crews worked day and night to reopen the highway, for if I-95 had been shut down for a more extended period, the economic impacts would have been tremendous and potentially devastating due to the inability to move goods and services and the costs of additional congestion created by the diverted traffic on alternate routes. This 24/7 repair effort helped reopen the highway on June 23, just 12 days after the crash.
