The Oakland Avenue Improvement and Expansion project has significantly eased congestion and enhanced pedestrian and cyclist safety along the Oakland Avenue segment of SR 286. Led by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, this $18.7 million project widened SR 286 to meet current design standards and provided safety and multimodal operational improvements throughout the corridor. The project included the enhancement of 11 intersections, six of which are now signalized. Additionally, the project updated all guide rails, signage, pavement markings, and safety features to current standards, with drainage and stormwater facilities extended and added as necessary. The project also built new bicycle and pedestrian accommodations, including new sidewalks and bicycle lanes in both directions. All of those improvements significantly benefit all system users while also improving congestion management, boosting multimodal connections, and enhancing safety features. The project also included construction of a new bridge over the waterway McCarthy Run; a structure designed to handle a higher volume of water, thus reducing the risk of flooding and improving overall drainage in the area.
