Bridges along interstate routes in Columbia, SC, are now a top priority for the South Carolina Department of Transportation due to heavy passenger and freight traffic. Many of the 1,778 bridges on the Interstates and major Primary Routes are over 60 years old, with 63% in need for replacement or repair. The $14 million I-77 Bridge Deck Rehabilitation project addressed 17 bridges along I-77 through two nine-day closures – one for rehabilitating nine northbound bridges and another for eight southbound bridges. Construction involved removing deteriorated concrete, pouring new concrete for specific spans, and grinding the surface to ensure a smooth drive. With the rehabilitated bridge decks, the corridor is now safer and less prone to traffic disruptions from frequent maintenance or emergency repairs. These improvements are part of SCDOT’s broader plan to enhance the bridge and interstate network, aiming to strengthen regional connectivity and support economic growth across South Carolina.
