South Carolina Department of Transportation’s Port Access Road Project

The new Hugh Leatherman Terminal is poised to make a significant economic impact, estimated at over $60 billion, while greatly enhancing container ship traffic to the bustling port of Charleston. To meet traffic demands and minimize community impacts, the Port Access Road was constructed based on required environmental studies. This road serves as a highly visible and critical link between the Interstate system and the new port facility, enabling the seamless flow of goods to and from Charleston and the surrounding region to global markets. Designed to alleviate the burden of increased truck traffic from the local road system, the Port Access Road provides a direct connection to I-26. The $385 million project increased safety by diverting truck traffic to and from the terminal away from local city streets in North Charleston. It safely integrates traffic coming to and from the container terminal with existing traffic, supports local and regional planning policies and strategies, and minimizes negative impacts on nearby communities and the environment.
