South Carolina Department of Transportation’s US 176 Road Safety Assessment

US 176 in Berkeley County, SC, serves as a crucial commuter route for residents of the City of Goose Creek, the Town of Moncks Corner, and the community of Sangaree. A recent study revealed that the crash rate in this area was 2.5 times higher than the statewide average. To address that safety concerns, a $4 million South Carolina Department of Transportation project tackled access management issues and enhance traffic control measures. This included upgrading traffic signals, pavement markings, and signage. The installation of concrete medians replaced the two-way left turn lane, while new pavement markings improved lane visibility, channelization, and pedestrian crossings. The anticipated outcomes of the project are better traffic flow, a safer roadway environment, and a more aesthetically pleasing corridor.
