The Keystone Wye interchange consists of two timber bridges that provide access to Mount Rushmore. This $4.5 million project aimed to address several issues with the existing deck, bridge railing, and approach roadway for the bridges, with the goal of improving safety and meeting current load-carrying requirements. Despite the challenges posed by the need to preserve the iconic timber superstructures of the two bridges, the South Dakota DOT wrapped up the project in a timely manner to minimize disruptions during the tourist season. To meet its project delivery deadlines, the agency worked to ensure that the bridge’s capacity met current standards while preserving its historical character. By using concrete decks and steel rails in place of timber, the agency aesthetically improved South Dakota’s most famous bridges and extended their service lives — meaning tourists can continue to visit the Black Hills region, which is home to Mount Rushmore, and thus continue to provide a boost to both the local and state economy.
