The South Dakota Department of Transportation’s Hot Springs Urban Reconstruction project brings a modern touch to a historic community, with a strong focus on pedestrian mobility through innovative design and construction. Supported primarily by Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act formula funds, the $40 million project included new highway surfacing, Americans with Disabilities Act or ADA-compliant pedestrian facilities, upgraded storm sewers, new lighting, and improved city utilities such as sewer and water. Durable concrete pavement replaced aging asphalt to better accommodate vehicle and truck traffic. In addition to meeting ADA standards, the pedestrian upgrades enhanced the overall character of U.S. Highway 385 as it runs through the city. The project plays a key role in revitalizing historic downtown Hot Springs and preserving its vitality for future generations.
