South Dakota Department of Transportation’s Interstate 90 LaCrosse Street Diverging Diamond Interchange

With LaCrosse Street traffic set to surge by 35% to 65% by 2035, certain turns at the Interstate 90/Lacrosse Street junction are expected to become highly congested. As a result, the South Dakota Department of Transportation proposed building a Diverging Diamond Interchange to ease future traffic woes while also improving pedestrian infrastructure as well. This $17.5 million initiative successfully boosted vehicle capacity, enhanced pedestrian links, and reduced delays – particularly during peak holiday and tourism seasons. Moreover, it ensured compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act regulations, improving pedestrian access between shops and hotels on both sides of I-90. Those improvements not only lower user expenses but also make regional shopping centers more accessible; bolstering the economy of South Dakota’s second-largest city. Notably, pedestrian activity at the LaCrosse DDI has visibly increased.
