South Dakota Department of Transportation’s Maintenance Equipment Management System or MEMS

The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) formerly relied on older mainframe systems dating back to the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s for equipment, inventory, maintenance, and asset management. Those systems, however, proved difficult to manage and support. Consequently, SDDOT opted to replace them with modern alternatives; aiming for user-friendly technology that aligned with current standards yet requiring minimal training for employees. This $2.57 million project is ongoing and is poised to benefit SDDOT by optimizing business processes and enhancing the collection and utilization of information. Previously, accessing information through older systems proved challenging, with only a select few employees capable of generating the required reports. This new system could potentially enhance every facet of the department’s maintenance operations, boosting the overall condition, safety, and reliability of the state highway system. This, in turn, will offer users of these highways a significantly improved level of service.
