Texas Department of Transportation: Southern Gateway Project

The Southern Gateway is part of a statewide initiative driven by the Texas Department of Transportation to reduce bottlenecks on highways in its five largest urban areas. The $660 million project is part of the Texas Clear Lanes Program – an initiative aimed at easing congestion on roadway. In the Dallas areas, this project also provides easier access to the Dallas Zoo – a major attraction in the area that, as a result, further increases highway traffic. This Southern Gateway Project will ultimately benefits users by improving reliability, increasing travel options with the inclusion of managed lanes for regular commuters, and boosting safety via an updated roadway design. The projects will also renovate roads originally designed in the 1960s with longer ramps and the addition of auxiliary lanes. It will also smooth out the Zang Boulevard curve in the Dallas area; a site notorious for heavy traffic congestion and frequent crashes. The Southern Gateway project is also establishing a brand new public green space – beautifying the surrounding neighborhoods and creating a vibrant new area for future community gatherings.
