Texas Department of Transportation’s Irving Interchange Improvement Project

Completed in spring 2024, the $301 million Irving Interchange Improvement Project transformed a once-congested network of four interchanges near the old Texas Stadium site—previously plagued by outdated cloverleaf ramps and narrow lanes. As part of the Texas Clear Lanes initiative, this Texas Department of Transportation project eased peak-hour traffic, improved safety, and enhanced mobility. Key upgrades included 10 new direct connectors, 22 overpasses, nearly five miles of widened highway, and advanced Intelligent Transportation System components. As the final link in the State Highway (SH) 183 corridor between Dallas and Fort Worth, the project also improved access to DFW International Airport, with westbound SH 183 speeds increasing by 25 percent. Designed with future growth in mind, the interchange can accommodate a planned light-rail spur serving over 1,000 acres of undeveloped land.
