For decades, the White Rock Creek Trail, Cottonwood Creek Trail, and Northaven Trail ran alongside U.S. 75 in Texas with only a dark, muddy underpass connecting them – making it difficult for cyclists and pedestrians to cross safely. The Northaven Trail Bridge significantly improved the pedestrian and cyclist experience, connecting one trail west of U.S. 75 with two trails on the east side – with a third connection point in the works. Led by the Texas Department of Transportation, the $9.3 million project presents new opportunities for expanding transit and trail connections to White Rock Lake. Since its inception, the bridge has served as a beacon for the North Dallas community and a magnet for trail users of all kinds. The trail’s bridge arches above highway traffic and has become an instantly recognizable part of the landscape; tying together greenbelts on both sides of U.S. 75. The new connections also improve pedestrian and cyclist access to a nearby transit station served by one of the trails. Hundreds of people now use the bridge on a daily basis – creating more opportunities for active transportation in that part of Texas.
