Texas Department of Transportation’s State Highway 146 Expansion Project

The Texas Department of Transportation’s $217 million State Highway 146 expansion project in Houston constructed a 2.1-mile-long express bridge to bolster safety and mobility for local users. This initiative removed high speed port-bound freight traffic from the local traffic lanes, improving traffic situation for local users, such as residents, school buses, and business patrons. Sidewalks, shared-use lanes, and a one-mile-long bike lane were also constructed to ensure safe access for pedestrians along the SH 146 corridor. Grade-separated intersections were constructed at the nearby Repsdorph as well as at a NASA facility to include U-turn lanes, dedicated turn lanes, and extra capacity, ensuring safe and efficient travel through these areas. In the long term, the entire community benefits from the SH 146 accessibility and safety improvements, potential economic development opportunities, and decreased traffic congestion.
