In Sussex County, VA, the intersection of Route 35 and Route 40 gradually became a high-traffic area, with Route 35 traffic passing through uninterrupted while Route 40 traffic had stop signs. The heavy traffic, especially from trucks, led to a high number of crashes. An $11 million Virginia Department of Transportation project sought to improve safety at the intersection via the installation of flashing lights, updated stop signs, and refreshed pavement markings – all in just one day. Since the project’s completion, safety has improved significantly. Local residents and the Sheriff’s Department have both observed a decrease in crashes and are pleased with the results.
