Washington State Department of Transportation’s WSDOT Data Center Modernization

The Washington State Department of Transportation’s aging and decentralized information technology (IT) infrastructure – spread across three main data centers and numerous computer server rooms – posed increasing risks to reliability, cybersecurity, and operational continuity. These limitations hindered WSDOT’s ability to meet the demands of modern transportation, remote work, and real-time services for the public. The Data Center Modernization project addressed these challenges by migrating WSDOT systems to secure, scalable cloud environments. This $2.4 million initiative improved system performance, disaster recovery, and cross-divisional collaboration – from accounting and signals to traffic operations. The result is a more resilient and efficient IT backbone that supports faster incident response, reduced signal outages, and more dependable services for Washington’s communities and travelers. By modernizing its infrastructure, WSDOT ensures that the state’s transportation system continues to operate safely, securely, and reliably keeping people, goods, and services moving across Washington.
