West Virginia Department of Transportation’s Babcock State Park Trails

In February 2022, $700,000 in grants were allocated to rehabilitate and create new recreational trails in Babcock State Park. Half of the funding was used to upgrade an existing trail along a former narrow-gauge railroad bed, while the other half supported the opening of a five-mile stretch of trail extending from Babcock’s current trail system to the community of Sewell. The West Virginia Department of Transportation sought to improve access on the existing trail, particularly for mobility-challenged visitors. The project also included constructing an intricate stairway linking a section of the trail to a swinging bridge over a creek, along with an observation deck overlooking the water. These trail improvements enhanced accessibility and boosted tourism opportunities. Babcock State Park and the New River Gorge National Park are both scenic outdoor treasures for West Virginia residents and visitors. This restoration project has improved access and safety, making it easier to explore both locations.
