West Virginia Department of Transportation’s Trout Run Bridge

The Trout Run Bridge, a railroad bridge between Cass and Durbin, was completely washed out during a 1985 flood and was never reconstructed due to high costs. Instead, West Virginia DOT collaborated with the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad and utilized WVDOT’s Central Forces – a team of specialists who tackle special projects throughout the state – to build a new bridge five miles from Cass, accessible solely by rail. The $3.25 million project reopened the rail line between Cass and Durbin, expanding tourism opportunities and improving access for the people who live along the rail line. The new venture is expected to significantly boost tourism in the area by adding an excursion train along the route to attract visitors.
