West Virginia Department of Transportation’s US 340 Rock Fall Mitigation

The West Virginia Division of Highways – a division of the West Virginia Department of Transportation – took proactive steps to stabilize a towering rock cliff between 150 and 300 feet above US 340, enhancing safety for all road users. Since the highway’s construction in the 1950s, falling rocks and debris had damaged vehicles. Without intervention, the mountainside would have continued to deteriorate, posing a serious hazard. The $13.3 million US 340 Rockslide project improved safety and stability for nearly 25,000 daily motorists and Harpers Ferry residents. Harpers Ferry, a historic town with Civil War significance, attracts visitors nationwide and relies on US 340 as the main route to the National Historical Park. This project not only made the area safer but also supported tourism and economic development in the region.
