Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s Zoo Interchange North Leg

The North Leg project, the final phase of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s Zoo Interchange program on I-41, expanded a 1.7-mile stretch from Swan Boulevard to Burleigh Street, adding a fourth lane to ease congestion and improve safety. This $160.6 million dollar project included reconstructing the North Avenue interchange, building new bridges, enhancing bicycle and pedestrian fatalities, adding noise barriers, and improving roadway drainage. Since completion, the interchange witnessed a 50 percent drop in crash rates – including a 60 percent reduction in rear-end collisions – while shortening travel times and improving traffic flow.
