Bird Road and Homestead Toll Plaza Open Road Tolling Modifications

From concept to concrete, project development and construction was completed in the record time of seven months. The overall goal of open road tolling (ORT) was to improve safety and provide better service to the SunPass customers at two of the busiest toll plazas on Florida’s Turnpike — the Bird Road toll plaza with an average daily traffic (ADT) of more than 120,000 vehicles and the Homestead toll plaza with an ADT of 67,000.

With this ORT project, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise (FTE) was able to accelerate open road tolling at the Bird Road and Homestead toll plazas by nine years and 2.5 years, respectively. FTE was able to deliver an immediate low-cost interim solution, while minimizing throw-away dollars in the transition to full ORT. As the majority of our customers currently use SunPass — Florida’s pre-paid electronic toll collection system — the project provides direct benefits to the Turnpike’s preferred customers.
