“I could not be more proud of the incredible workers who are making the West Approach of the bridge a reality, a full seven months ahead of schedule. This is exactly the type of skill and cooperation that the people of California expect and deserve from their government.”
— Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger

Public Outreach Program and Replacement of the West Approach of the Oakland Bay Bridge

As part of a larger project to seismically retrofit the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge, Caltrans replaced a 1-mile stretch of Interstate 80 in San Francisco that serves as the bridge’s West Approach. As a result, it was necessary to completely close the Bay Bridge — a vital transportation artery — for three days over the 2007 Labor Day Weekend. This caused Caltrans to initiate the largest public outreach campaign in California transportation history to promote the closure.
