WI: Mitchell Interchange

Wisconsin-Mitchell-InterchaWisconsin Department of Transportation greatly improved access to the City of Milwaukee and the General Mitchell International Airport with its reconstructed the junction of I-94/I-43 and I-894 in southern Milwaukee County, which  opened up to drivers two months ahead of schedule.

WisDOT’s $256 million Mitchell Interchange project included four interchanges, 19 new bridges, three tunnels, and more than 40 retaining walls, among other aspects. To move the almost three-year project along quickly, WisDOT implemented various closures for portions of the project and worked closely with the community and project stakeholders to stay on track. All this allowed WisDOT to able to open up all lanes of traffic two months ahead of schedule, allowing drivers to take advantage of the better access to vital destinations months earlier than expected.
