Arizona Department of Transportation’s $32 million US 89 Interim Detour project was an emergency effort in response to a landslide that closed the highway to all traffic, causing significant delays for motorists. ADOT decided to utilize an underused road in the Navajo Nation to provide the best detour. ADOT and Navajo Department of Transportation worked together to develop the route not only as a detour but an improved roadway Navajo Nation’s use. The detour route was promptly restored a connection for the public benefiting the traveling public, school children, and movement of goods and services.
