Iowa Department of Transportation’s $1.3 million Massena Bridge construction replaced a more than 75-year-old bridge by using a new construction method to reduce costs, construction time, and inconveniences to motorists. By constructing prefabricated pieces and sliding them into place, Iowa DOT was able to close the bridge for only nine days instead of the standard 180-day timeframe. The newly replaced bridge also allows freight trucks to cross without the weight limit on the previous bridge, improving conditions for the local freight economy.
