Minnesota Department of Transportation’s $1 million Mississippi River Trail planning and implementation project brought together local communities and partners to promote bicycling and bike-friendly communities along the newly developed Mississippi River Trail. The trail, now part of the U.S. Bicycle Route System, is currently the longest contiguous bike route in the country and the first state bikeway in Minnesota. The 800-mile trail connects cities, counties, tribal lands, and both state and national parks together while promoting an active lifestyle and an alternative to driving.
