FL: Port of Miami Tunnel

Finished Port of Miami TunnelFlorida Department of Transportation’s $666 million Port of Miami project successfully built the largest soft ground bored road tunnel in North America, decreasing traffic congestion in downtown Miami by providing a direct connection between the Port of Miami and the interstate highway system, supporting freight and regional commerce while preparing for increased demand in a post-Panamax era. This project worked closely with design and construction teams to build a tunnel in South Florida’s challenging limestone and coralline formations.

  1. Traveling south on the dense traffic of I-95 to reach the Port tunnel was made most difficult by what I feel is a LACK OF PROPER SIGNAGE to direct travelers to the right exit. Both greater number and higher visibility of signs for travelers to avoid missing their exit to this great port that is the pride of Florida would be most welcome.

    1. Hello Mr. Spreitzer:

Thank you for your email. There are overhead advance and exit direction sign panels for PortMiami via tunnel along I-95 SB. There is a total of 4 overhead signs for this particular destination starting from the SR 112 interchange (1 mile north of the exit). The number of overhead signs installed meets current federal signing criteria and provides adequate advance information for the driver to make a decision. Please note that due to the physical and geometric constraints of I-95, there is no possibility of adding any other advance guide sign for this particular destination. Please find below the locations of the 4 overhead sign panels along I-95 SB:

I-95 SB – South of SR 112 interchange – First Overhead Guide sign for PortMiami via Tunnel (Overhead structure approximately located just north of NW 29 Street)

I-95 SB – South of SR 112 interchange – Second Overhead Guide sign for PortMiami via Tunnel (Overhead structure approximately located just south of NW 23 Street)

I-95 SB – South of SR 112 interchange – Third Overhead Guide sign for PortMiami via Tunnel (Overhead structure approximately located just north of NW 17 Street)

I-95 SB – South of SR 112 interchange – Fourth Overhead Guide sign for PortMiami via Tunnel (Overhead structure approximately located just south of NW 17 Street at the exit towards I-395 East)

Please let me know if you need additional information. Thank you.
