Illinois Department of Transportation – Galesburg Bridges over Railways

Illinois Department of Transportation’s $64 million project improved road and rail transportation by building grade-separated road lanes at rail crossings, thereby allowing vehicle and train traffic to continue unimpeded while removing the risk of grade-crossing crashes. The project built a bridge over the tracks that carries 10,000 vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists a day and improves their route to the primary downtown corridor. It also allows uninterrupted movement on 100 freight trains while the roadway overpass gives emergency vehicles quick access in and out of the city. Officials say this project and 12 others will improve living conditions by reducing the need for trains to sound horns at intersection.
