Connecticut Department of Transportation—Replacement of Bridge #05234

Bridge #05234 carrying traffic off I-84 East in Manchester, Conn., was experiencing traffic backups on a regular basis.  To fix this issue for driver safety and convenience, CTDOT replaced the bridge with a wider one and address the short stopping sight distance at the location. CTDOT used Accelerated Bridge Construction techniques to cut construction time and also worked with GFRP reinforcing bars and other innovative technologies to save money in the long run on maintenance and extend service life. This project demonstrated CTDOT’s commitment to implement technologies to make bridge construction faster and structures last longer with the minimum long-term maintenance cost.
