Recognizing the need to improve management and operation of traffic signals, PennDOT initiated an in-house development of a Traffic Signal Asset Management System to accurately manage the department’s $1 billion in assets and be available to PennDOT districts, planning partners, municipalities, contractors, and consultants. An up-to-date centralized repository of assets, with details of subcomponents inventory and maintenance modules were implemented in August 2016. PennDOT’s new $2.1 million TSAMS is expected to dramatically improve management capabilities of the state’s traffic control infrastructure, increase mobility and safety for motorists through better management, operations, and maintenance capabilities, and increase efficiency in handling infrastructure related documents such as permit plans, reports, and correspondence.
