Rhode Island Department of Transportation—Providence-Newport Ferry

In July 2016, RIDOT launched a revolutionary new ferry service from Providence, the State’s capital, to historic Newport, the “City by the Sea” and a major tourist attraction. This service provided Rhode Island residents and out-of-state visitors an affordable way to enjoy Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay and an alternative method of transportation to Newport, a city often clogged with traffic during the summer. The $600,000 project attracts users through things like free bike storage, pet accommodations, and overall convenience. Ultimately, the ferry service helped stimulate tourism in both cities and ridership far exceeded expectations, carrying 33,000 people during its summer run.
