Rhode Island Department of Transportation—Trains to Planes

RIDOT’s $30,000 Trains to Planes service offered free train rides from Providence Station and the train station at T.F. Green Airport in Warwick to Quonset Point in North Kingstown in June 2016 for the popular Rhode Island National Guard Open House and Air Show’s 25th year. In years past, hundreds of cars would travel I-95 and Route 4 to get to the show, clogging roadways and increasing overall congestion. RIDOT’s free train service offered a reliable alternative transportation option that reduced congestion, having a positive impact on those not attending the show as well by reducing traffic. The service also demonstrated the value of transit options to state residents for the 4,000 people that utilized the program, which is expected to only grow in the coming years.
