Milwaukee’s $29 million Lakefront Gateway project by WisDOT improved quality of life and transportation options for the entire community. Reconstructed boulevards with traffic responsive signals increased mobility. Streetscaping strengthened the visual tie between downtown businesses and adjacent neighborhoods. Transit opportunities were enhanced with the provision for additional bus service near the Summerfest festival grounds as well as the preliminary Milwaukee Streetcar alignment improvements. Inclusion of sidewalks and a multi-use trail resulted in greater bicycle/pedestrian safety and linkage with parks and other attractions. At the project’s center, relocating two I-794 ramps and reconstructing two others yielded more efficient travel to the port, the airport, and other freight destinations.
