The intersection of S-106/S-387/S-1065 in Lexington County was selected by the South Carolina Department of Transportation Safety Office for improvement through the Federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), due to the area’s higher crash rates and need for additional safety measures. To fix the issue, SCDOT decided to construct a roundabout, a great alternative for tradition signalized intersections. The $1.4 million completed Lexington Roundabout ended up significantly reducing congestion in the area while greatly increasing safety. In fact, preliminary data shows a 66 percent reduction in total crashes and a 100 percent reduction in injury crashes.
