South Dakota Department of Transportation — U.S. Highway 81 Roundabout Project

The South Dakota Department of Transportation needed a permanent solution to address the safety concerns, incidents, and traffic backups on rural Highway 81 in Brookings. This $2 million project constructed a roundabout that opened traffic in four directions. The roundabout needed to be sensitive to the traffic needs of these businesses and trucking, as well as the needs of the traveling public. To facilitate construction, an on-site traffic diversion was installed prior to work on the actual roundabout, helping to move traffic through and was removed when construction was complete. SDDOT worked with law enforcement, the city, and private businesses to ensure the public would be served during major events. The roundabout is expected to carry significant traffic in coming years – providing a safer and faster commute that helps to improve the entire community.
