Maine Department of Transportation’s Searsport Route 1 Reconstruction Project addressed safety, access, and mobility challenges on a busy section of Route 1 that serves local traffic, freight, and visitors. The $17.7 million project added a center turn lane, filled sidewalk gaps, and – in coordination with the town – added lighting and brick sidewalks, creating a safer, more functional, and more attractive gateway to Searsport’s downtown.  Meanwhile, continuous and more accessible sidewalks, along with upgraded pedestrian lighting, created a safer and more welcoming environment for people walking between neighborhoods, schools, businesses, and the waterfront. These improvements support downtown vitality by encouraging foot traffic, improving access to local shops and services, and reinforcing Searsport’s small-town character. Maine DOT noted that the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act or IIJA provided support that enabled this project to progress from planning to completion, with IIJA funds used as part of a critical state federal funding match, allowing the agency to leverage additional resources and advance construction on schedule. This support ensured delivery of key safety and accessibility upgrades that might otherwise have been delayed. By modernizing an essential coastal corridor, the project helps strengthen regional transportation reliability, support local commerce and tourism, and extend the useful life of existing infrastructure.
