New York State Department of Transportation’s Hunts Point Access Improvements

New York State Department of Transportation’s Hunts Point Access project addressed long-standing community concerns about air quality, the lack of safe pedestrian and bicycle access, and the need for resilient infrastructure, including advanced stormwater management and electric vehicle charging facilities. This effort was a game changer for residents, removing 13,000 trucks from the local street network each day by separating freight traffic from neighborhood streets, improving safety and easing congestion. More reliable truck access to the Hunts Point Terminal Market also supports local jobs and economic opportunities throughout the borough. This $1.7 billion project transformed the local South Bronx community, modernizing infrastructure at Hunts Point Peninsula and creating a direct route to the Hunts Point Terminal Market.  The initiative built direct access links to Hunts Point Market, home to one of the largest food distribution centers in the world. Through this project, New York State DOT addressed traffic congestion and inadequate multimodal connections that hindered community growth.   In addition, the project added new and improved bike lanes, sidewalks, and shared-use paths. A reconstructed pedestrian bridge provides safer routes to schools, public transit, and parks, including better access to Public School 75 and the new Hunts Point rail station. Additionally, modern stormwater drainage, tree planting, and electric vehicle charging stations contribute to improved environmental conditions and air quality.
