California Department of Transportation’s Oceano Plaza project transformed a block off Highway 1 into a vibrant community hub. Home to approximately 7,000 residents, the small coastal town of Oceano needed a central public space where the community could gather and connect. The $1.4 million project added new sidewalks, safer crosswalks, improved lighting, seating, and bike amenities. By closing a side street and revitalizing it with palm trees, seashellinlaid concrete, solar lighting, whimsical benches, and a signature art sculpture, the project reimagined an autooriented roadway as a welcoming, pedestriancentered plaza. Designed for markets, community events, and everyday use, the space improves walkability and multimodal access while strengthening connections between neighborhoods, families, and seniors. Oceano Plaza benefits both the local community and the regional economy by improving access to local businesses and supporting increased foot traffic and economic activity. Improvements to safety, connectivity, and public identity make the community more appealing to residents, visitors, and future investment, particularly in an underserved area where new amenities can help stimulate long-term economic vitality.
