Nebraska Department of Transportation’s 23rd Street Columbus project delivered a series of critical upgrades to improve safety, mobility, and accessibility. Crews replaced aging pavement and enhanced traffic operations by extending four existing turn lanes and constructing five new ones. The project also modernized the corridor with upgraded traffic signals and improved lighting – ensuring longer turn lanes and better reliability with pavement replacements. In addition, new sidewalks were installed along the route, complete with Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps to ensure safer and more accessible travel for all users. As an urban segment of U.S. 30 intersecting U.S. 81 and a primary route for residents, 23rd Street garnered community-focused improvements designed to enhance livability. The $44.8 million project spanned 20 city blocks, rebuilding water mains and storm sewers, adding streetscape and landscaping features, and constructing a stormwater treatment basin—all while minimizing disruptions to the community. Pedestrian access received a major facelift with widened sidewalks and compliant curb ramps at all 20 intersections. Streetscaping investments included more than 250 trees and 1,200 shrubs and grasses  to beautify the area, while new lanes and modern traffic systems improve traffic flow and safety for all users. Columbus residents now benefit from a modern thoroughfare that improves traffic flow and better connects the community. Funded in part by formula Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act construction funds, the new and improved 23rd Street serves not only as a smoother roadway but as a strengthened community asset for residents and visitors to downtown Columbus.
