Nebraska Department of Transportation’s I-80 Variable Advisory Speed Signs project uses innovative technology to help drivers adjust their speeds proactively when traffic, wind, snow, or ice make travel at posted speeds unsafe. The initiative improves safety along a critical freight corridor by providing real-time speed guidance during rapidly changing weather conditions.

Western Nebraska faces unique transportation challenges, carrying heavy Interstate 80 traffic while remaining one of the state’s most rural and remote regions. Severe winter weather can develop quickly, creating hazardous driving conditions across long stretches of highway. With such a vast area to manage, NDOT needed a way to slow traffic safely during deteriorating conditions, including in areas between interstate closure points.

The solution was a network of remotely controlled Variable Advisory Speed Signs installed at regular intervals along I-80 between the Wyoming border and Overton, Nebraska. The signs provide timely speed recommendations based on current roadway and weather conditions, helping drivers make safer decisions before they encounter dangerous situations.

The $11.5 million project delivers significant benefits for all travelers, particularly commercial truck drivers, as long-haul freight traffic represents a substantial share of I-80 volumes. By improving driver awareness and encouraging safer speeds during adverse weather, the system reduces crash risk, enhances mobility, and helps keep a vital interstate corridor operating safely and efficiently year-round.
