Minnesota Department of Transportation’s Highway 371 Hackensack, Minnesota Corridor Improvement Project reshaped downtown Hackensack into a safer, more welcoming, and walkable community space. The $8.43 million project added continuous sidewalks, curbs and gutters, and clearly defined crosswalks along the corridor, creating a protected pedestrian environment where none previously existed. 

It also introduced a new roundabout and center turn lane, making travel more predictable and safer for all users. The corridor now supports downtown vitality with parallel parking, improved streetscape features, and easier access to local shops. It also improves connections to the Paul Bunyan State Trail and the city park on Birch Lake. 

Upgraded utilities and environmental improvements further strengthened reliability, leaving the community with a more connected and vibrant main street. 

Funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act supported this project by sustaining the National Highway Performance Program and Highway Safety Improvement Program, providing the state with the resources needed to rebuild Highway 371 to improve safety, walkability, and overall quality of life in downtown Hackensack.
