Greenville Bypass constructed 16 miles of new four‑lane highway from Leland to the Mississippi River Bridge near the city of Greenville. The $216 million project removed heavy truck traffic from residential and business areas along the U.S. 82 corridor, improving safety, relieving congestion, and enhancing driving conditions throughout Washington County. The Port of Greenville processes the largest volume of raw products in the Mississippi Delta, moving more than five million tons of cargo each year – with many of them carrying potentially hazardous materials.

Before the bypass opened, much of this freight traveled directly through Greenville, where tight turns, signalized intersections, and local congestion created safety risks and delays. The bypass now diverts an estimated 800 large trucks per day away from city streets, easing traffic and improving corridor performance. Motorists benefit from travel‑time savings of 15 to 20 minutes, while freight operators gain more reliable schedules and safer routes.

As a multimodal hub with port, rail, airport, and transit assets, Greenville plays a vital role in regional logistics. The bypass strengthens connections between river shipping, rural production areas, regional highways, and national markets.
