Tennessee Department of Transportation’s Old Hickory Boulevard at Myatt Drive Highway Safety Improvement transformed a high‑crash intersection into a safer, more navigable crossing for drivers and pedestrians in Madison. Once known for its confusing traffic patterns and limited pedestrian infrastructure, the intersection transported nearly 34,000 vehicles each day and experienced 78 crashes over a three‑year period, including three fatalities and two serious injuries. The risks affected residents and visitors commuting to work and school, accessing nearby businesses, and traveling the corridor daily. Identifying this vital safety need, Tennessee DOT launched a $1.1 million project to address these challenges and improve conditions for all users. Pedestrians can now cross the intersection safely taking advantage of signalized crossings with accessible ramps, substantially lowering the probability of severe and fatal crashes. Motorists also benefit from improved sight lines, added space, and clearer traffic movements, making travel through the intersection calmer and more predictable. Supported by Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act safety funding, Tennessee DOT delivered pedestrian upgrades, turn‑lane extensions, and access improvements that would not have been possible with local funding alone. By evaluating the intersection from the user’s perspective and responding to real‑world travel behavior, Tennessee DOT changed detected risks into long-term safety improvements for the community.
