Caltrans— Interstate 5 Managed Lanes Project Study Report

The HOV lane on I-5 in Orange County has been experiencing an increase in traffic volume for some time. In order to address the issue, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) commissioned a study to look at 14 miles of I-5 to come with innovative solutions to combat the problem. Averaging over 304,500 vehicles a day and serving as a major freight corridor, Caltrans worked in collaboration with regional transportation agencies to develop the study that looked at improving HOV occupancy requirements, modifying for additional lanes, and the consideration of converting HOV lanes to price merged lanes. This $2 million project paves the way for future sustainable infrastructure options, increased transportation options to travelers, and improvements to overall operations in the region.
