Delaware Department of Transportation— U.S. 301 Mainline Project

Improving safety and relieving congestion were the main priorities for the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) when focusing on the $636 million U.S. 301 reconstruction project. Before the reconstruction, the fatality rate was 60 percent higher than the state-wide average on similar roadways and 70 percent higher than the national average. This new 14-mile, four-lane highway extends northeast to the Delaware and Maryland state line. With 18 of 29 intersections utilizing signals, the new U.S. 301 relieves traffic congestion and improves traffic flow to the Middletown area by separating freight and local traffic from the same road. Since opening in 2019, U.S.301 has registered more than 6.2 million trips, not only providing a safer travel experience, but offering economic growth opportunities that will boost the area for years to come.
